The Crystal Palace was built and designed by Joseph Paxton for the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London in 1851. It was rebuilt permanently on the site of Penge Place at the top of Sydenham Hill, south London in 1854 and burnt down in 1936.

The Victorian terraces pictured in the print (situated at the top of Crystal Palace Park) would have led visitors down from the Crystal Palace building to the grounds.

The Crystal Palace television transmitter mast - also depicted in the screen print - was completed in 1956 and was once the highest point in London.
