South Norwood Lake and Grounds are situated off Auckland Road between Crystal Palace (Upper Norwood) and South Norwood. The lake was originally built to be a reservoir. It fed the Croydon Canal (1809 & 1836) which stretched from Croydon to the Grand Surrey Canal at New Cross. It was usurped by the railway which used the canal's bed to build on. The lake and grounds became the Norwood Sports Club (boasting a golf course and tennis) before becoming a public park. Today Croydon Sailing Club uses the lake as do anglers fishing for carp and perch and the park houses South Norwood Bowling Club, Cricket pitches, Tennis and Basketball courts, a kiosk and The Lakes Cafe.
